Neighborhood day today! My group went to Shantigram, which
is a suburb about 20 – 30 minutes away from our school. It is an area that is
being developed and turned into a town. Literally from barren land to town.
They are building very expensive and fancy apartment buildings, a hotel, a high
school, a college, golf course, cricket field, gas station, mall, office
building that looks like the white house, pools, and a ton of beautiful
landscaping. We met with one of the contractors and got a tour of what they
have built so far. We went into one of the model apartments…beyond beautiful.
They gave us amazing tea…the best tea that I have ever had in my life. We went
to a really nice place for lunch on the way home. On their menu they claim that
Jacqueline Kennedy ate there once. Ahmedabad is also the ice cream capital of
India, so we all got ice cream after our meal. YUM.
After that we came back to the school and planned the rest
of our day. A few of the girls from the college took us into the Old City,
which was super crazy. Tons and tons of people, and lots of fun stores. I
bought some earrings. Then we all wanted to meet up for dinner, so they told
the autos to take us somewhere but our auto got lost. So the three of us who
were lost went on our own for dinner and then got cupcakes. It turned out to be
a great night. We even made it back to our hotel without getting lost! The
autos here don’t bargain with you…they give you a price based on how far you
go. Imagine that.
