April 16th, 2013 – Mi Casa Es Su Casa…Literally

We had the day free today to explore the city, figure out how to get to school from where we lived, run errands, etc. B woke me up around 9:30 because the shower wouldn’t stop…I feel like something wrong like that happens on the first day in every house (like that time I flushed the soap down the toilet). Our host mom helped us fix it and told us not to worry and that everything was fine. We had cereal, toast, and tea for breakfast. Much lighter than Senegal. Then we went out to explore.

B and I made a list of all the things we had to accomplish today. We first got subway cards, which took forever because we were redirected to different post offices all around the city because some don’t take international people and some do. We finally figured it out. Then we got a cell phone to share while we are here…they are much more expensive than in Senegal. But it was great having one there, so we decided it would be worth it to get one here too. Then we came home for lunch: gnocci and some chicken. Delicioso.

Then we set out again. This time, we took the subway to our school to practice how to get there. The subway system makes so much sense here and it was fairly easy to find our way. Then we came back to our area and walked to a park, which is right by our house. The park is incredible – it has a bike path, a walking/running path, a lake, people fishing, and lots of families walking their dogs. I plan on running there often. So excited that there is so much green open space here. We stopped at some cute boutiques in the area as well, which are all really expensive but really nice.

Then we came home for a snack, before going out AGAIN. We window shopped, bought some shampoo, and just walked around before coming home for dinner. Fish patty type things, vegetables, and potatoes for dinner. Also delicious. We talked with our mom about what happened in Boston, and then got into a discussion about 9/11. Such deep convos over dinner.
